Camera Field of View Test

Objective: To test which GoPro field of view if most optimal for the side camera to record the tray opening and closing. Gaining footage of the horizon is also a secondary goal.

Method: GoPro Hero 3+ Silver, the camera that will be used for the sides, was mounted in its casing and payload box to simulate recording on the day of the flight. A previous model of the petri dish assembly will be positioned at various distances on the side. A ruler was used to measure the distance of the payload from the petri dish assembly to record different distance possibilities.

The camera was recorded at 1080p and 60fps.

Camera mounted into the new, lightweight casing.

Using a standard ruler to measure distance.

Below is a diagram of all the possible frames of second and fields of view for each resolution within GoPro Hero 3+ Black, the camera that will be used for the top.  It has been determined for the side camera to record at 60fps at 1080p, in which the possible fields of view are wide, medium, and narrow. The wide and medium fields of view will be tested.
(GoPro Hero 3+ Silver only has 1080, 960, 720, and WVGA resolutions. 1080p has 30 and 60fps, with wide, medium, and narrow fields of view. 960p has 30 and 60fps with only a wide field of view. 720p has 30, 60, and 120 fps with all three fields of view. )

2. MEDIUM FIELD OF VIEW

3. MEDIUM FIELD OF VIEW
The hole opening for the camera for the current payload box is right in the middle of the side. For the new payload box that will be created once all parts are ready, the placement of the camera will likely be shifted towards the left (from the payload side viewpoint) so that it can come closer to the dish to better record it. To simulate this change, the dish assembly was, in turn, shifted to the right to check how the camera can still record the dish. The footage was captured for various distances from the payload and the different possible positions of the camera mount.

3 inches away, assembly shifted 1 inch to the right

3 inches away, assembly shifted 2 inches to the right

4 inches away, assembly shifted 1 inch to the right

4 inches away, assembly shifted 2 inches to the right

Conclusion: The dish was visible in all fields of views and positions. However, due to the fisheye effect of the wide angle, the medium angle will be used. It was determined that shifting the camera mount is desirable to better record the dish opening. Professor Griffo informed us that the dish assembly will likely be about 3 inches away. This experiment will be repeated once all the parts are printed to more closely resemble its conditions on the day of launch.
